    The History of

    Cheaha State Park

Located in Clay and Cleburne Counties, Cheaha State Park is the pinnacle of natural beauty and awe in Alabama. Surrounded by the Talladega National Forest, this foothill of the Appalachian Mountains holds the reputation of the highest point in Alabama. Standing 2,407 ft. above sea level, it is no wonder why the local Creek Indians named this place “Chaha,” meaning high place.

In 1933, the State of Alabama acquired lands, which today comprise 11 of our State's 22 Parks. A cooperative effort with the State of Alabama and the National Park System, paved the way for the Civilian Conservation Corp's (CCC) development of Cheaha State Park, under President Franklin Roosevelt's “New Deal.” This same year construction began on Cheaha State Park. The Park celebrated it official grand opening in 1939, some six years after it opened to the public. Its continuous operation since 1933, makes Cheaha, Alabama's oldest continuously operating State Park.

After the CCC's completion of the Park, the public enjoyed 11 stone cabins, the hand made Cheaha Lake and its stone bath house, two stone pavilions, the Observation Tower and the Bald Rock Group Lodge, which was the only hotel servicing the Park at the time. Increased public demand and the wear of the original structures sparked the construction of the Cheaha Restaurant, 5 chalets and the current hotel in 1973. Later renovations updated the original facilities in 1997, ensuring that the beauty and hard work of the CCC men who built this Park would live on for generations to come. Today all these facilities, to include many new day-use areas, are fully available to our guests.  Our continuing efforts to offer our guests every modern convience extend to our Restaurant & Hotel Lobby where we are now proud to offer wireless high-speed internet service.
